Mental Health First Aid for Headteachers and SLT (2 day course)

We would like to offer you an exciting opportunity to qualify as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

With the introduction of the Government’s Green Paper, Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision, schools will be expected to have a designated mental health lead by 2025.

This course will give a comprehensive understanding of mental health affecting youth and signpost you to valuable resources which will help you to support.

As a centre of excellence and National Award winners for their provision and services to mental health in education, you will be given a unique opportunity to not only receive your qualification but to speak to and learn from the very best.

About the trainer

Ben Commins is headteacher of an inner city London primary school with over 15 years teaching experience. He has been part of a team who have won awards for workplace wellbeing, promotion of healthy relationships and national award winners for Children and Young People’s Mental Health.

Ben is passionate about promoting positive mental health and committed to ensuring all his staff are equipped with the correct skills to deliver support to the young people within their care.

Overview

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognised two day training programme. Learning is presented across four areas through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions. Each session is built around a Youth Mental Health Action Plan and you will get a manual to keep and refer to whenever you need it.

On completion of the course you will be a qualified Youth Mental Health First Aider with the Mental Health First Aid England qualification.

What will I learn?

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Two Day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider.Youth Mental Health First Aiders will be equipped with:

  • An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing.
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress.
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, careers and external agencies where appropriate.
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive.
  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing.
